Epidural Injections

These are injections of steroids, with a local anesthetic that are placed in the space between the nerves and the herniated disc. Although I rarely consider cervical epidurals appropriate, lumbar epidural injections are safe and provide the possibility for long term pain relief. It may be necessary to have one, two, or even three of these done initially, and there may be the need for annual injections to control the pain. These are done as an alternative to surgery but can also help to guide surgical options, if the injections fail.
